Pond's is an American brand of beauty and health care products initially developed by the Pond's Extract Company. Pond's first product was Pond's Cream, invented as a patent medicine by pharmacist Theron T. Pond (1800–1852) of Utica, New York, in 1846. Pond had extracted a healing tea from witch hazel, which he discovered could heal small cuts and other ailments. The product was named "Golden Treasure." After Theron died, it would be known as "Pond's Extract."
By 1910, Pond's was a well-established brand among Americans and would soon become an international name. The company launched several successful advertising campaigns by the 1920s by highlighting product endorsements from princesses, society beauties, and Hollywood stars. During the 1930s, the company's business slowed due to the Depression. Nevertheless, the Pond's company expanded. Pond's brand products are commercially available today, though the original Pond's Extract Company was acquired first in 1955 by Chesebrough Manufacturing Company and again in 1987 by Unilever PLC.
