The George W. Luft Company was founded in 1920 by George William Luft (1869-1939). After receiving a degree from The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, Luft began work at a drugstore in Utah. He then co-founded several companies including The United Drug Company, The American Druggists' Syndicate, The Vogue Perfumery Company, and eventually the George W. Luft Company which would produce pharmaceuticals as well as cosmetics. Ultimately, his name would be associated with just one cosmetic brand - Tangee.
The name Tangee was derived from tangerine, the color of the brand’s first and most iconic product, Tangee Natural Lipstick. This product swiftly gained popularity because it supposedly transformed from a tangerine color in its lipstick tube to a unique shade of rosy pink to compliment the wearer’s skin tone upon application, though this characteristic likely only applied to a narrow range of skin tones, excluding many individuals. Tangee's marketability was drawn from the claim that the formula was "natural-looking" in comparison to other heavy lipsticks on the market. Tangee brand products eventually expanded beyond lipstick to include crême rouge, rouge compact, night and day creams, and face powder.
