Keystone Laboratories, Inc. was founded in 1923 by two white, Jewish chemists, Morris Shapiro and Joseph Menke. Based in Memphis, Tennessee near the famed Beale Street, the founders saw an unmet need in the African American community. In the 1920s, hardly any manufacturers of personal care products recognized that there was an African-American market. Consequently, many women living in rural areas used generational homemade products. Keystone was one of the first businesses to provide African American clientele with a diverse line of cosmetics, hoodoo conjure supplies, as well as various medicines. Moreover, they sought to employ individuals from the local African American community. The company sold and distributed a wide range of products, including shampoos, skincare, and hair care products to multiracial consumers worldwide until 2019, when the business was acquired by Ampro Industries, Inc.
