Valmor Sweet Georgia Brown Liquid Face Powder
- 1934
An orange, black, and gold rectangular Sweet Georgia Brown brand product label from the Valmor Products Company featuring an image of a woman's head wearing a pearl necklace. The top and bottom portions of the label are decorated with floral motifs.
Charles Dawson and Jay Jackson, African American graphic artists, designed the company’s labels. Works by Dawson and Jackson, including those for Valmor, have since been displayed at the Chicago Cultural Center.
Valmor Products was a Chicago-based mail-order cosmetics and personal care company founded in 1926 by husband and wife team Rose and Morton G. Neumann (1898-1985). Morton Neumann was a Jewish Hungarian-American chemist from Chicago. He created Valmor when he realized that there was an untapped market for African American cosmetics. Valmor was based on the South Side of Chicago and produced several sub-brands including Lucky Brown, Madam Jones, King Novelty, and Famous Products Co. The Mortons ran Valmor until the company closed in 1984.
The Morton family built a fortune from the success of the Valmor company, which they spent developing a significant and extensive private collection of fine art.
