Fajans was a student of Georg Bredig at the University of Heidelberg. Fajans was a pioneer in the science of radioactivity and discovered the element protactinium. In 1935, he fled Germany and relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he worked with Max Bredig (1902-1977) at the University of Michigan.
