Van't Hoff is considered to be one of the founding fathers of physical chemistry. In 1901 van’t Hoff received the first Nobel prize in Chemistry “in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the laws of chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure in solutions.” Around 1894, Georg Bredig completed a portion of his post-doctoral work in van’t Hoff’s laboratory in Amsterdam.

Geehrter Herr Doktor!
Sehr freut mich Ostwalds Bestellung.
Ihr J. van’t Hoff

Dear Doctor,
Thank you for your message. I am aware of the concerns and may be able to determine the magnitude of the impact. The main point of this letter is to ask whether you can order me a complete apparatus for measuring carrier fluids. This includes a resistance vessel, a flamer and induction wave, and a measuring bridge and resistance box, all of which you are using now. I am very pleased about Ostwald's appointment.
Yours,
J. van't Hoff
