Loewi was a German-born pharmacologist and psychobiologist. In 1936, he and his colleague Sir Henry Hallet Dale (1875-1968) were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of the role of acetylcholine as an endogenous neurotransmitter. In 1938, Loewi was living in Austria and was arrested by the Germans upon their invasion. He was released only after surrendering his research materials to the Germans. After he fled Austria, he immigrated to the United States in 1940.
