This sample book begins with a selection of recipes for the preparation of dye vats. Each recipe lists the solvents and solutes necessary to mix large-volume solutions of indigo textile dye using Indigo M.L.B. brand powdered dye, a synthetic indigo created using the "Pfleger indigo process," the first commercial process of indigo dye production. The recipes are followed by a series of protocols for indigo "resists" or the media used to prevent dye from penetrating the textile. Resist-dyeing is a traditional method used to create patterned designs on textiles. Substances are used to "resist" or prevent the dye from reaching all the cloth, thereby creating a pattern. Finally, the work contains 16 plates of mounted yarn and fabric samples demonstrating the outcomes of the preceding recipes.
