Liebe Ilse,
August. Er ist wie ausgewechselt, die Briefe, sind vergnügt, witzig, besser geschrieben...Hochwald at his best.
Er schreibt: “I got your letter and photograph through Mrs. Wedell, your no – letter of May 19 and your money. The first thing I did was to drink a liter of “rancio”, a very pleasant wine of the country, at your health; with a bad conscience thinking that I spent the money for which you could buy a nice summer frock. For the first time since I am in Spain I am eating well and enough. The consequences appeared at once: I have the desire to work, and I am writing about the theory of patents. I think that patents, this technical conception of spiritual property, were one of the most refined and characteristic sociological appearances of the 19th century, but this conception is preposterous in the new form of society, but so far….. I got a clear idea how it could be changed. For the first time I feel that I am writing something really original for which I got no impulse from anywhere else. Let us hope that it will not have the fate of most original papers to become famous after the death of the author. You see I cherish the idea of working in Europe after the war…….”

Dear Ilse,
Today, I would like to share with you the exciting news that our money served its purpose in Spain. I received two letters from Hochwald dated June 29th and August 8th. He’s like a different person. His letters are cheerful, funny, and better written…Hochwald at his best.
He writes: “I got your letter and photograph through Mrs. You see I cherish the idea of working in Europe after the war…….” The people in Palestine remembered him again and promised him a Palestinian visa from Turkey as soon as it is possible to travel again. (better not!!) He also writes that conditions in the camp have improved and that it is possible to get enough to eat with money.
As always, he sends regards to you all in New York. He didn’t receive my letter on August 8th, which explained who the sent him the money. He only received the wire transfer. It is interesting that he only mentions the Minneapolis money, although his brother claims to have sent money to him in July. Well, I’ll get to the bottom of it.
You may be interested to know that Edith Hochwald is working in a factory and his mother is in a hospital.
Did you arrive in Navarro on August 25th with a bouquet of flowers?
Hopefully you had a nice summer. I can’t say the same for me. The weather was terrible, and I had to work to much. I could go on vacation now, but I can’t because of a possible employment opportunity. I don’t want to ruin my chances.

In essence, it is how we are treated. Oh well! Perhaps I will go to Texas. Then I can see America from coast to coast and from Canada to Mexico. Afterwards, I can actually leave again.
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Warm regards,
Ilse W.
Please say hello to Dr. Bredig and Professor Nord.
