Two sets of mortar and pestles belonging to Georg Bredig (1868-1944). The larger is made of white porcelain and the smaller is made from agate. Mortar and pestles are used to manually grind or crush a sample into a fine powder. Agate is harder and less porous compared to porcelain and reduces the number of impurities introduced to a sample during the grinding process.
