Caricature of American chemist Charles Phelps Smyth (1895-1990) created by artist J.C. Weller at the 1931 American Chemical Society National Meeting in Buffalo, New York. A recipient of the Medal of Freedom (1947), Smyth worked in the National Bureau of Standards and the Chemical Warfare Service during World War I and on the Manhattan Project and the Alsos Mission during World War II.
