Svante Arrhenius is known as one of the founders of Physical Chemistry. In 1903, Arrhenius was the third person to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his electrolytic theory of dissociation which states that molecules of acids, bases, and salts dissociate into ions when dissolved in water. In 1905, he was appointed the director of the Nobel Institute for Physical Chemistry.
