The terms set forth in this work are still used today in modified form. The work represents the cornerstone of Antoine Lavoisier’s (1743-1794) chemical revolution; it resulted from his epic discoveries that made a new and rational nomenclature imperative. Initiated by Guyton de Morveau (1737-1816), the project was soon taken up by Lavoisier. They entered into collaboration with Claude-Louis Berthollet (1748-1822) and Antoine-François comte de Fourcroy (1755-1809), to produce the present volume.
Translator, Karl Freiherr von Meidinger (1750–1820), included two papers by Jean-Henri Hassenfratz (1755-1827) and Pierre-Auguste Adet (1763-1832) and two reports on nomenclature in this German edition. Further, a leaf of directions to the bookbinder (“Bericht an der Buchbinder”), six folding copperplates depicting chemical symbols, and an engraved table (“Tafel der chemischen Nomenklatur”) are included. Digitized content includes the cover, title page, and an engraved table of chemical symbols.
