The author, in his preface, describes the introduction of Western dyeing techniques in Japan. The body of the work includes recipes for preparing dyes and methods of application. One method discussed is the well-known yūzen (友禅染) dyeing technique, in which dyes are applied inside rice paste outlines. The paste keeps the dye areas separated, and was a way to quickly produce elaborately decorated fabrics with the illusion of being hand-painted. Other dye recipes and methods discussed include dyeing silk cloth black, dyeing cotton crimson, restoring discolored clothing, grape wisteria dyeing, and Jiao brown dyeing.
