Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932) was a German chemist and philosopher. In 1909 he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on catalysis and his investigations into the fundamental principles governing chemical equilibria and rates of reaction.
Ostwald, along with Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff (1852-1911), Walther Nernst (1864-1941), and Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927), is considered one of the founding fathers of the field of physical chemistry. When he retired in 1906, Ostwald studied art, philosophy, and politics.
Georg Bredig studied under Ostwald and became his student assistant. While assisting Ostwald, Bredig worked on colloidal metals and their catalytic properties.

Ihre freundliche Sendung aus dem Karlsruher Tageblatt, für die ich bestens danke, erinnert mich daran, dass ich Ihnen noch nicht wie ich längst hätte tun sollen, meinen herzlichen Dank für den festlich-gemütlichen Tag in Karlsruhe ausgesprochen habe. "Ihnen" bedeutet hier den Plural, denn Ihrer verehrsten Gattin gebührt ein wesentlicher Anteil daran. Die Ursache war, dass ich zuhause ein Gebirge unerledigter

Post vorgefunden habe, mit derer ich noch immer nicht ganz fertig geworden bin. So habe ich auch noch nicht einen Pinsel angerührt und muss den Wunsch, Ihrer Gattin ein Beispiel aus der theoretischen Farbharmonielehre zu widmen, auf freiere Tage verschieben.

My dear friend Bredig,
Your article from Karlsruher Tageblatt, for which I thank you very much, reminds me that I have not yet expressed my gratitude for the festive and pleasant day in Karlsruhe. I should have done this a long time ago. "You" implies “you all” because your lovely wife also deserves credit. Why am I so late in responding?

I found a pile of mail at home that I still haven't replied to. I also haven't painted in a long time and must postpone showing your wife an example from the “Theory of Color Harmony” until I have a day off.
