Only the first four volumes of the Opera were published in his lifetime, and the other volumes were compiled by his pupils from his manuscripts. This work was compiled by Aldrovandi's pupil, Bartholomaeus Ambrosinus (1588-1657).
The work is divided into four sections: on metals, earth, concrete juices, and stones (minerals, rocks, and fossils). The work includes discussion on the medicinal properties of rocks, minerals, and gems, and chemical topics such as transmutation, acids, alkalies, salts, crystals, and magnets. Only select illustrations have been digitized.
