Philatelic First Day Cover commemorating African-American chemist Percy Lavon Julian (1899-1975), who first synthesized the drug physostigmine. Julian ingeniously figured out how to synthesize important medicinal compounds from abundant plant sources, making them more affordable to mass-produce.

The illustration on the envelope was produced by ArtCraft and postmarked on January 29, 1993, in Chicago, Illinois. The stamp is a 29-cent stamp from the Black Heritage USA series.
