General view of the Steam Vulcanizer in the Rubber Compounding and Processing Laboratory at the Naval Air Experimental Station. Also known as an autoclave, the vulcanizer was use to cure, i.e. toughen or harden polymer materials like the sheeting and tubing fabricated in the laboratory, through exposure to open steam or dry-heat. When applied to rubber, this process is also known as vulcanization. This photograph was included in a 1949 Naval Air Experimental Station report on compounding rubber.
