This print, engraved by Jean Jacques Le Veau after a painting by Marie-Marc-Antoine Bilcoq, shows a bearded alchemist examining a flask in the warm light of an unseen window. In a humble chamber behind a wooden doorframe, we see two women waiting for the alchemist's diagnosis. He is likely performing uroscopy, the examination of urine for the diagnosis of disease. The alchemist's young assistant holds a piece of glassware from a nearby distillation apparatus, surrounded by books, papers, and flasks.
