Smith's résumé also included over 180 publications, leadership in several academic and professional organizations including as president of the American Chemical Society, and several honors for his work including the Priestly Medal in 1926. Smith was well-regarded as a public speaker. This speech was one of his many talks celebrating Pennsylvanian scientists such as John Bartram (1699-1777), David Rittenhouse (1732-1796), Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815), and Joseph Leidy (1823-1891).
