Lieber alter Freund Bredig!

Also bitte freundlichst unser Fortbleiben entschuldigen zu wollen.
Mit vielen herzlichen Grüssen

My dear old friend Mr. Bredig,
My wife and I had thought long and hard about attending the annual general assembly and today your letter from May 15th arrived. However, “world history is now moving forward in seven-league boots,” as my collegial friend told me recently when we had treated ourselves to a very short holiday trip. Meanwhile, there had been so much procrastination here in Berlin. We convinced ourselves not to travel anymore.

Here is Berlin there are likely many surprises! Please kindly excuse our absence.
With many warm regards,
W. Nernst
