Plate 9: Bateau volant
Flying boat
- 1783
Inscribed: "Copié sur celui du Jesuite-Lana."
Faujas de Saint-Fond’s research for Description des expériences took him to the library of the King, where he consulted the book Prodromo, ouero saggio di alcune inuentioni nuoue premesso all'arte maestra (Brescia: Rizzardi, 1670) by Jesuit Francesco Lana de Terzi (1631-1687). Its sixth chapter details a project to construct an airship meant to move with sails and oars. The ship was to be held aloft by four globes containing a perfect vacuum. Lana’s method for creating the vacuum proved impossible. Faujas de Saint-Fond nevertheless reproduced Lana’s design in his preliminary section of Description des expériences as an important precursor to the work of the Montgolfier brothers and their contemporaries.
The inscription "Sellier Sculp." at lower right suggests the engraver was either François Noël Sellier (born 1737) or his son Louis Sellier (born 1757).
