This silent film shows a demonstration of the "Turbo-Cat" expeditionary catapult. Developed in the 1950s by Don Doolitle and manufactured by the All American Engineering Company of Wilmington, Delaware, the system used the exhaust from six jet engines to power a track and cable system that would propel an aircraft on the ground at high enough speeds to enable a launch into the air. The Turbo-Cat was designed to be portable and to enable planes to take off in quick succession, using a short runway. This film demonstrates not just an aircraft launch, but also the installation of the system and test runs.
