Interior of an Apothecary's Shop
- 1600s
A seated alchemist instructs his young apprentice in this image of a large and well-stocked apothecary's shop. The walls are lined with blue ceramic vessels likely containing medicines, tonics and purgatives, as well as natural oils and herbs. A small portable furnace heats a pan at left. Distillation equipment--glass alembics and other vessels--are piled at right. Fruits and vegetables spill out on the floor alongside pans and basins for preparing organic medicinal goods.
