Established in 1872 by the Atlantic Giant Powder Company, the Kenvil plant was the second dynamite plant built in the United States. The Hercules Powder Company (later Hercules Inc.) took over the facility in 1913 and built a smokeless powder line that allowed the company to become a major Allied supplier during World War I.
