This artwork depicts the "Age of Instrumentation" as the culmination of centuries of scientific progress through five stages: Discovery, Curiosity, Analysis, Technology, and Automation. This painting was featured in the lobby of the Beckman Instruments plant in Fullerton, California, and was used on the cover of the company's 1957 annual report.
