Plate 4: Machine aerostatique
Aerostatic machine
- 1783
Inscribed: "de Mr. Montgolfier, construite dans le Jardin de Mr. Reveillon, rue de Montreuil Fauxbourg St. Antoine, aux dépens de l’Académie Royale des Sciences."
Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier (1745-1799) assembled this large balloon in the park of the suburban Paris wallpaper factory of Jean-Baptiste Réveillon (1725-1811). On September 12, 1783, in front of the members of the Royal Academy of Sciences, who financed the experiment, the hot air balloon was able to lift a charge of around 500 pounds several feet off the ground before inclement weather caused damage to the balloon and the experiment was terminated. The balloon, purportedly drawn from life for this engraving, was painted blue with decorative elements in gold.
The inscription "Sellier Sculp" at lower right suggests the engraver was either François Noël Sellier (born 1737) or his son Louis Sellier (born 1757).
