An Archimedean Screw
- Part of Vier Bücher der Ritterschafft
- 1529 (M.D.XXIX)
A device for raising water, the Archimedean screw consists of an external cylinder surrounding a screw. The bottom of the cylinder and screw must be immersed in water, which is not correctly depicted here. If the screw is turned faster than the water's descent to equlibrium, the water level will be drawn up until the water exits from the top. The device was known and used in antiquity, and dubiously attributed to Archimedes.
