An illustration of a man using Lockyer's telespectroscope. Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer (1836-1920), designed this instrument in order to observe the spectra of the prominences in full sunlight. Lockyer is best known for discovering helium after observing it as a yellow line in the spectrum taken from the sun.
